Top 10 that. Chances are you were \"drawn\" to these things sprawling across everywhere as \"click baits\". \"Look-At-Me\" Corporate Dinner Awards. Then the pecs. Biceps. Abs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6c8aa-0-0\">I know I've been drawn to \"click\" onto these stories should I struggle for attaining \"inspirations.\". Or when I am just simply down. No doubt people keeps throwing out knee jerk \"advices\" and feel good \"motivational quotes\" around.<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"3bblo-0-0\">\n<p data-offset-key=\"3bblo-0-0\">I have been lately quite immersed on finding out why people do this. <span data-offset-key=\"5sc2n-0-0\">It all began from me reading <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5sc2n-1-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/criticalmas.com\/2013\/09\/fitness-blogging-disclosures\/\">Michael Smith's blog \"Critical Mas\". <\/a>He believed that the fitness and health industries are subject to this cognitive worshipping known as <strong>Survivorship Bias.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NtUCxKsK4xg?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" frameborder=\"0\" data-thumbnail-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/NtUCxKsK4xg\/0.jpg\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9pfbq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9pfbq-0-0\">How can this <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"9pfbq-1-0\">be ignored<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9pfbq-2-0\">? <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"7l64e-1-0\">I'd wager is how today's norms use this Bias as means to <strong>motivate.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><em>\"Look at &lt;famous people here&gt; Do what they do!\" \u00a0.\u00a0\"Cheer up! <span class=\"qualifier\">Just<\/span> focus on the positive.\"\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<p class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1k7jeQQdqPA?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" frameborder=\"0\" data-thumbnail-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/1k7jeQQdqPA\/0.jpg\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1>Two sides of the \"Bias\".<\/h1>\n<p>Despite its insidious reception, I understood completely that it is human nature to \"fall\" into someone else's hands should things do not fall in our favour. One may argue then, that any bias, can be benevolent, helpful even. However at the same time, we can also be blinded by our own <strong>ego<\/strong> should dopamine rush fill at<strong> influencing us <\/strong>to keep thereby <strong>influencing<\/strong> others at the expense of the unseen, or the unheard arguments.<\/p>\n<p>So here in this write up I'd like to add and propose two further side(s) on how I best understand the rationale behind this <strong>Survivorship Bias.<\/strong> One is productive, the other\u00a0 ~insecure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\">\n<h1 data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\">Motivational Vs. Reflectional<\/h1>\n<p data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\">All Bias(es) especially expressed as statements \"I believe\" or any sage advice ~ amidst any point of sale, expression, elevator pitch, whatever of a pitch one can call it ~ and irrespective whether one perceive as good or bad thing ~ all largely depends on the <strong>intent <\/strong>of\u00a0 the initiator. Let's admit it, <strong>it feels good<\/strong> to influence others, by firstply placing our own selves as that very 'figure' for inspiration, and thereby <strong>the signalling beacon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8qqkc-0-0\">But the more I think and ponder the more I realize there are two (2) distinctions, even though they're subtle, but impact wise, they are different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8qqkc-0-0\">That is, a bias can be either <strong>Motivational<\/strong> (sound obvious at first, but hold off that thought for a bit). Then Reflectional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e9lof-0-0\">Let's examine the differences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Motive. \"Mo-tive\"-ational quote statements.<\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/diiy0g.dm.files.1drv.com\/y4ms87TlOWmsJeK975TXWOZV-hYApzwu8KTSXihWmzAuNBo_dfl6QdNNQSfwVVkJbwbCHrUgUWMsOm3JdfviqSZdOzmEXAQrlZUeonWg7ydrY-rUSrTYcIgWNd1bDZPsmR23h4Ga3Dxw5AJpjvS0dyy7nKyrsqDp4kXMKMwjfticGYktfIGi7dpbadPX9nfNdnix1BMndBx43Du9nqLiuIgLA?width=1055&amp;height=1583&amp;cropmode=none\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"1050\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unsplash.com \/\u00a0Matthew Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"34upu-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"34upu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"34upu-0-0\">Motivations are never arbitrary.\u00a0<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-0-0\">Motives <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-1-0\">are drawn by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-2-0\"> inner desire to have an \"epi\" or \"on-top\" of unmarked further gesture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"34upu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-2-0\">This is likely inspirational quote\/s that strikes <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-3-0\">purely<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-4-0\"> for one's own objectivism. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-5-0\">Likely to be \"simplified\" in a metaphorical sense. It tries to hide the subjective complexity behind it<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5cvjc-6-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"49i8m-0-0\">\"Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven.\" \u00a0- Paradise Lost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"e0fre-0-0\">\"Greed; for the lack of the better word - is good.\" - Gordon Gekko.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"ehqpq-0-0\">\"Be greedy when others are fearful and be fearful when others are greedy.\" - Warren Buffet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"eavu1-6-0\">The above is certainly more \"crafty\". But they too, can be egocentrically simplified amongst these examples:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"26r9d-0-0\">\"Cheer up! Never ever give up.\"<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"dsn1-0-0\">\"Seek and you <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"dsn1-1-0\">shall<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dsn1-2-0\"> find.\"<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"8psc7-0-0\">\"When one door closes, another door opens.\"<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"4uupt-0-0\">\"There is always someone who is worser than you. Suck it up.\"<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"aee0d-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3pmpe-3-0\">Examine the word motive itself.\u00a0<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-0-0\">Mo-tive<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-0-1\"> is<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-0-2\">\u00a0\"Mo-tion\"<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-0-3\"> or at least, a visual, end-process evidence of \"movement\".<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-0-4\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-1-0\">Therefore<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-3-0\">in order to<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-4-0\"> \"move\", you need an <\/span><strong><span class=\"complexword\">objective<\/span><\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"fi1em-6-0\"><strong> leverage<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"d1n53-0-0\">What \"MOVES\" you after all; IS what motivates you. <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c58g1-0-0\">Where's the reflectional understanding of its' PROCESS? Nothing. You are MOVED <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"c58g1-1-0\">simply<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c58g1-2-0\"> because of the alluring outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d2b13-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d2b13-10-0\">They're selling you an illusory carrot. Nothing more. Technology make this somewhat worse. By handily curating amongst only the first two or three pages of search engines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-0-0\">There are <strong>potentially<\/strong> a lot more \"Bill Gates\", \"Warren Buffet\", \"Robert Kiyosaki\", \"Steve Jobs\" in our midst. Just with chaotically different backgrounds and contexts. Some may not even be alive.\u00a0<strong>They just aren't being found or \"survived\" in first two pages of Google or Youtube.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-0-0\">Now compare to that with what <\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-1-0\">I consider<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5ai2l-2-0\"> \"Reflectional\" statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Reflect. \"Re-flect\"-tional.<\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 571px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/diix0g.dm.files.1drv.com\/y4mORrKJS9QPiW1zQ8S1J9ZdPKQ1VXAlIb9yleCUBNE3rnvRG0OuQKK0OLu4FVZUXJ8FI3tvPUy2jA5l3fHjCTd1pnLKYaBtfvv-Eu_pE4ucHiiqaohdQMx2OotxXWapi0LN5_NgzAl5ddGUod9ftGu5KV8DalI7LJ5x7HXGz6ywwwwUzHC-YXVod6f3xjNM8tOvblWAA-IvqX66UZTvA_aLA?width=1491&amp;height=2236&amp;cropmode=none\" width=\"561\" height=\"842\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew E Weber \/ tookapic.com<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"cjdep-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cjdep-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cjdep-0-0\">Reflectional quotes are those that<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cjdep-2-0\">\u00a0do not speak in any linear outcomes. I<\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"cjdep-3-0\">nterpretively<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cjdep-4-0\"> \"flexible\". Each neither dictates for objectivist or intrinsic egoism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cjdep-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"42b9d-0-0\">See if these quote\/s below ever <strong>dictates<\/strong> you have to <\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"42b9d-1-0\">do things exactly in \"this\" way. Or \"that\" way only.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1lj67-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1lj67-0-0\">\"There are no facts. Only interpretations.\" - <em>Friedrich Nietsche.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1lj67-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"brgaq-0-0\">\"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.\" - <em>Socrates.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b6kkj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b6kkj-0-0\">\"99 percent of who you are is invisible and untouchable.\" -<em> Richard Buckminster Fuller.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bkark-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bkark-0-0\">\"Thinking is difficult. After all we are incessantly drawn to the outcomes (<strong>Explicit<\/strong>) more than their progress (<strong>Implicit<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3js7l\" data-offset-key=\"2p761-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2p761-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2p761-2-0\">Hence, I argue the <strong>Reflectional<\/strong> statements are more attune to reality. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2p761-2-0\">Because each<\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"2p761-3-0\">\u00a0simply<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2p761-4-0\"> reminds you\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2p761-7-1\">that nothing in life is black or white.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1>Other Cognitive Biases<\/h1>\n<p>\"Survivorship Bias\" is just one of many cognitive biases as encountered in the realm of Economics, politics, applied mathematics and statistical science. The list is not exhaustive, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.au\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjAi5Gqu9LRAhXGJJQKHeobBXoQFggdMAE&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedaily.com%2Fterms%2Fanchoring.htm&amp;usg=AFQjCNFdTWXrTqHyDD9Hi2uagzYq2EQv-w\">Anchoring<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/b\/bandwagon-effect.asp\">Bandwagon Theory<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selective_perception\">Selective Perception<\/a> amongst many others - nonetheless remain fascinating for one to read further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wEwGBIr_RIw?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" frameborder=\"0\" data-thumbnail-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/wEwGBIr_RIw\/0.jpg\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>How you would react to the above Phenomenon of Survivorship bias?
